Local SEO
to be understood at the right moment.
SEO is structural work: clear pages, clean titles, speed, structured data and content that answers what your clients actually search for. Local SEO for a Quebec small business comes down to three things: a Google Business Profile that is kept current, service pages that name your region, and a site Google can read without effort.
What I track
01
local queries that can generate a request
02
pages Google should understand without guessing
03
forms, calls and actions to measure
Local should be obvious
When someone searches for a service in Sherbrooke, Magog, Coaticook or elsewhere in the province, Google should understand where you work, what you do and why your site deserves to be suggested.
On a phone, a local search puts the map and its three listings above the first classic result. I know of no public figure for how many people stop there, but where it sits on the screen is something you can check by typing the query. That is why organic search work in the Estrie region never stops at the website: the Google Business Profile, the consistency of your name, address and phone number across directories, and the reviews you receive matter as much as your tags. A perfect site with an abandoned profile loses to an average site with a live one.
How it actually runs
SEO is not a one-time intervention. Here is the sequence, and what you supply at each step to keep it moving.
01
Access and inventory
I connect Search Console, look at the Google Business Profile and list the pages already indexed. Without that data, everything else becomes guesswork.
What you supply
Read access to Search Console, to the Google Business Profile and to the site admin.
02
Diagnosis
I list the technical problems, the weak or duplicated pages and the local queries with real potential. You get it all in writing, sorted by impact.
What you supply
The list of your services and the cities you genuinely serve, plus your three most visible competitors.
03
Technical fixes
Titles, descriptions, headings, structured data, sitemap, redirects and speed. This is the part nobody sees but which unblocks the rest.
What you supply
Confirmation of any edited copy, especially if your field imposes regulated wording.
04
Content and local pages
I rewrite or propose the copy that answers searches better, and build pages by service and by region when it is justified.
What you supply
Concrete details: completed projects, areas served, specifics of how you work.
05
Follow-up and adjustments
We look at what moves in Search Console and in the enquiries received, then adjust. First signals usually appear after a few weeks, serious movement takes several months.
What you supply
Feedback on the enquiries received and their quality, because that is the only measure that really counts.
What is included
The opening mandate covers the diagnosis and the fixes. Every item below either has a measurable effect or explains a decision.
Initial SEO audit and priority query list
I separate the searches that bring an enquiry from those that only bring traffic. A small business does not need a thousand keywords, it needs the fifteen that trigger a phone call.
Title and meta description fixes
Each page gets a unique title containing the service and the region. Duplicate titles let Google pick which page to show, and it often picks the wrong one.
H1 and H2 heading structure
One H1 per page, H2s that follow the logic of the content. That is what lets Google understand a page topic without reading every word.
Schema.org structured data
I add LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ markup depending on the page. It is what allows your hours, address and common questions to appear directly in results.
XML sitemap, robots.txt and canonical tags
These three tell Google what to crawl and what to ignore. Set wrong, they index useless pages and leave others invisible.
Google Business Profile optimization
Categories, description, listed services, service area, photos and hours. In the industry surveys on local search, the profile is the signal group respondents weight highest, ahead of the website.
Local pages by city or by service
A page that genuinely talks about Sherbrooke, Magog or Windsor, with content specific to each place. Identical pages with the city name swapped stopped working a long time ago.
Speed and Core Web Vitals
Compressed images, lighter scripts, stable layout. Core Web Vitals are measured before and after, and the target is green on all three. What Google ends up recording also depends on your visitors’ networks and devices, which nobody controls from the code.
Enquiry tracking setup
Search Console plus simple tracking on forms and calls. Without it, the conversation is about impressions instead of customers.
A written action plan after the diagnosis
You get the list of fixes in priority order, with what I handle and what depends on you.
What I do not do
SEO is a field where promises are cheap. Here are the limits, stated before the quote.
I do not buy links
No purchased backlinks, no private networks, no worthless paid directories. Those methods work for a few months, then expose the site to a penalty that costs far more to repair.
I do not promise any ranking
Nobody controls Google rankings, and anyone guaranteeing a first position is selling an illusion. What I can guarantee is the work done: structure, speed, content and local signals.
I do not manage your Google Ads
Paid advertising is a different job from organic search. The site can receive that traffic, but I do not handle bid management or media buying.
I cannot create your customer reviews
Reviews weigh heavily in local search, but they must come from real customers. I can set up how to ask for them, not write them.
I do not publish mass-produced articles
Filling a blog with empty text to occupy space no longer works. If the content does not answer a real question from your clients, it does not get written.
Common questions about local SEO
How long before SEO results show up?
Technical fixes appear quickly in Search Console, often within a few weeks. Ranking movement on commercial queries generally takes three to six months, sometimes longer in a competitive field. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is not talking about organic search.
Do you guarantee a first position in Google?
No, and nobody honestly can. Rankings depend on Google, on your competitors and on factors that change without notice. What is guaranteed is the work delivered, and the fact that you can verify it yourself inside your own accounts.
Do I really need a Google Business Profile?
For a service business in Quebec, yes. On a phone, the map and its three listings take the top of the screen, ahead of the classic results. And in the industry surveys on local search, the profile is what respondents weight highest, ahead of the website. A complete profile, with the right categories, service area and recent photos, is the first place to put your time.
What is structured data?
It is code invisible to visitors that describes your content in a format Google reads directly: your address, hours, services and common questions. It does not lift a page on its own, but it stops Google from guessing and lets you occupy more space in the results.
Does SEO work for a small Sherbrooke business on a limited budget?
Yes, often better than for a large company, because competition on a local query stays reasonable. An Estrie small business does not have to beat all of Quebec, only the few companies serving the same area. It is a field where clean work is often enough to move ahead.
Do you also manage Google Ads?
No. I handle organic search, not media buying. If your need is immediate and you cannot wait for SEO, I say so plainly and you can hand the campaigns to someone who does that for a living.
Does my content need to exist in both French and English?
It depends on your clientele. If you mainly serve the Estrie region, French alone holds up well. If you target an English-speaking or tourist clientele, the English version must be written and properly linked to the French one, otherwise Google treats the two versions as competing content.
